Sight and Blindness

Tiresias's blindness may represent his focus on the future and the events he foretells through his inability to see the present. He foretells blindness of Oedipus representing Oedipus's figurative blindness of his past and the events that are playing out before him. His literal blindness later in the play is his punishment for his previous blindness.
